Greetings, fellow Freedom Fighters™ and Defenders of Democracy™!

Today, we bring you an assortment of news. Read all about it …

- exactly what lifestyle the minimum wage can support
- Venezuela (and The Scallion) believe that the Bush administration is sabotaging their bid for temporary U.N. Security Council seat
- there is NO such thing as academic freedom: just ask Staughton Lynd (or Ward Churchill or Jan Blits for that matter)
- why Virginians should elect Jim Webb for U.S. Senate rather than George Felix Allen, who is "mediocre"

... and much, much more!

Keep the faith and keep fighting: together, we WILL win our nation back!

From Working Families

Hear it all from workers near the minimum wage and Roseanne Barr at the vlog 7 Days @ Minimum Wage debuting today.

Then sign the pledge to vote to raise the minimum wage Nov. 7.
Life at the minimum wage means $206 a week. It means swallowing your dreams and working just to survive. It means not being able to buy shoes for your children...putting in 10 hours a day just to pay for a room for the night...facing the hard fact that you can t afford college...not knowing where your family s next meal will come from.

All this week, ACORN and the AFL-CIO are hosting 7 Days @ Minimum Wage, a video blog (vlog) featuring low-wage workers struggling to get by and actress-comedienne Roseanne Barr. Each day there s a new story and a reminder of one great reason to hope: If we all turn out to vote Nov. 7, we can raise the minimum wage.

Please take a moment right now to pledge you will vote Nov. 7 to raise the minimum wage.

The only thing that has blocked an increase in the federal minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour has been the unwillingness of Republican congressional leaders to allow a clean vote on the legislation with no poison pills and no strings attached.

Minimum wage workers have been waiting a decade for a nationwide raise that can help lift their families out of poverty. But the Republican leadership has pulled every kind of cynical political ploy imaginable to block a minimum wage increase even holding it hostage to budget-busting tax breaks for the 8,200 wealthiest estates in America. Minimum wage workers should not have to get in line behind Paris Hilton and the Wal-Mart heirs to receive the long-overdue pay increase they rightly deserve. In this election, we must elect members of Congress who will give America a raise.

Your votes Nov. 7 will determine whether life will get a bit more livable for minimum wage workers.

Don t miss 7 Days @ Minimum Wage and don t miss your chance to give hard-working, low-wage workers a raise. Sign the pledge now.

Thank you for voting for working families.

In solidarity,

Working Families e-Activist Network, AFL-CIO

P.S. Follow all the state and national news about the minimum wage at AFL-CIO Now the AFL-CIO s news blog for working families.

From Jim Webb's Senate campaign in Virginia

We've got it! Today, the Washington Post endorsed Jim Webb's campaign for U.S. Senate. I could write a million words about why Jim is the obvious choice for Virginians, but I think I'll let the Washington Post do the heavy lifting today. From their endorsement:

[Jim Webb] was prescient in warning, back in 2002, that the war in Iraq risked stranding the United States in a long-term occupation without an exit strategy. An intelligent man with a record of integrity, he has resisted the packaging of political consultants, which can only be a good thing. Those assets, as well as his deep familiarity with military and national security affairs, offer the promise that he would make an able, if unorthodox, U.S. senator. And the fact that his youngest son is deployed as a marine in Iraq gives him a perspective that is rare in today's Congress.

The Washington Post writes about George Allen:

Quite simply, he is a mediocre senator whose six years of undistinguished service do not justify rehiring.

...Mr. Allen lacks any comparable independent-mindedness. He has spent his time in the Senate in lock step with the Bush administration, embracing tax cuts that have imperiled the nation's fiscal health; subsidies for oil and gas companies that hardly needed the help; prisoner detention policies that have undercut America's image abroad; and restrictions on embryonic stem cell research despite its medical potential.

...Virginians deserve better and more enlightened representation. Mr. Webb offers that hope.

This endorsement is huge news for our campaign and builds upon the momentum we gained this week with the release of our latest ad "Steer." This ad has had a devastating effect on George Allen's campaign simply by telling the truth about Senator Allen's questionable receipt of stock options, which were at one time worth $1.1 million. I can't tell you how effective this ad has been. Please take a moment to watch the ad , and then please ensure we have the resources to air it across Virginia.

Contribute to our Fight Back Fund today!

We're just 20 days away from election day. We have the momentum in this race, but we're not going to let up. We're going to get Jim Webb's message out to the voters. And on November 7, we're going to elect Jim Webb.

Sincerely,

Jessica Vanden Berg
Campaign Manager
Webb for Senate

GOP Rep. Weldon: Corruption Probe Intensifies...Fmr. FDA Chief: Charged With Lying About Stocks...

Scandals linked to the Republican Party continued to stack up yesterday.

A federal investigation into Rep. Curt Weldon (R-PA) intensified, with agents raiding the home of the congressman's daughter as well as several other locations near Philadelphia and Jacksonville, FL. Weldon is under investigation for corruption, facing accusations that he used political influence to gain lucrative lobbying contracts for his daughter.

News of another scandal broke yesterday. Former FDA Chief and Bush appointee Lester M. Crawford was charged with lying about the fact that he and his wife own stock in companies regulated by the FDA, a clear conflict of interest. These companies primarily deal in pharmaceutical and medical concerns, but the Weldon's stock options also include the food company Pepsico. Crawford served on the board of the FDA Obesity Working Group while in possession of at least $62,000 in Pepsico stock.

CHENEY: SITUATION IN IRAQ GOING "REMARKABLY WELL"...

Vice President Dick Cheney appeared on Rush Limbaugh's radio show yesterday, where the conservative host asked Cheney about mounting discontent among Americans with the war in Iraq. After admitting that there was "a natural level of concern," Cheney added, "If you look at the general overall situation, they're doing remarkably well."

His assessment seems unlikely in light of recent news out of Iraq, but moreover his words seem out of touch with American sentiment. Yesterday CNN released a poll that revealed public support for the war is at an "all-time low," with 64% of respondents saying they are against the war.

In an interview yesterday with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, President Bush accepted a comparison between the current war in Iraq and Vietnam War.

Stephanopoulos told the president that New York Times columnist Tom Friedman has compared the current situation in Iraq to the 1968 Tet offensive in Vietnam. Bush replied, "He could be right...there's certainly a stepped up level on violence, and we're heading into an election."
